Gear and Tackle: Surf Fishing for Bluefish on Cape Cod | S18 E6

The spring of 2020 brought a big wave of medium-size bluefish to Cape Cod for the first time in a few years. Most of the fish ranged from 3 to 6 pounds, but blues as large as 14 pounds were caught in late May and early June.

The blues were brought in by a bumper crop of bunker that settled into the Cape’s harbors, bays, and beaches, and would attack topwater lures, especially in the late afternoons and early evenings.

Kevin Blinkoff and I first came across the blues while kayak fishing for black sea bass, and soon discovered they were feeding within casting range of the shore. For a couple weeks, we found the blues just about every evening there was a wind blowing onto the beach. Tide seemed less important than the wind direction and time of day, as the blues would rally and feeding in the last hours of daylight.
