Long Island – New York Fishing Report – January 17, 2019
Things have been very quiet this week around Long Island. This is the time of year where tackle shops are busy fixing reels and building rods instead of selling bait and rigs. The good news is we did hear some reports of fishing both salt and freshwater around the island. Here is what your local shops had to say for the week.
Stella Maris Bait and Tackle reports, the party boats started sailing for mackerel this past weekend and did very well on Sunday. The bite has been somewhat hit or miss after that, but a good start to the season. The boats sailing for cod have been able to put together a catch on most trips as well. The herring fishing is still decent around the local Brooklyn spots.
Paul at River Bay Outfitters reports he has not heard much from the saltwater, but the freshwater he says has continued to produce. The Connetquot continues to fish well, the bad news is with this weather and the very cold weather coming next week, things might get shut down for some time.
Causeway Bait and Tackle reported that things have been quiet lately. They did however hear of some cod being caught inshore.
White Water Outfitters reported that things have also been slow in their area as well. They have been keeping busy though with building new rods and fixing anglers’ reels for the 2019 fishing season.
Fishing Forecast for Long Island
The weather this weekend and into next week does not look good if you are trying to get out there fishing. Things hopefully by the end of next week should improve to get us back out fishing. This time of year is also known as show season. If you cannot get out fishing, what’s better than going to a show this time of year and checking out some new gear and talking about fishing. You can check the upcoming events on our website to see what shows you can expect this year. One show you can check out this week is the Staten Island Fishing Club Fisherman’s Flea Market this Saturday January 19th held at the Labetti Post VFW in Staten Island. You can find good quality used fishing gear and brand-new items, and they will be having free seminars in the downstairs meeting room. The times will be announced at the event.
