Rhode Island Sets Striper Regulations for 2020
New rules will match with neighboring states.

The Rhode Island DEM has announced that for 2020, recreational striped bass fishermen will be allowed to keep 1 fish per day, within the slot limit of 28″ to <35″ with a season open year round. This makes Rhode Island’s rules consistent with other states from New York to Maine.
The decision, made by RIDEM Director Janet Coit, was a surprising dissent from the recommendation of the RI Marine Fisheries Council to create a special set of rules for recreational fishermen and a separate set of rules for for-hire (charter) fishermen.
“I find the coastwide measure to be most risk-averse and best suited to quickly and effectively reduce fishing mortality and rebuild the striped bass stock,” wrote Coit, in a detailed memo.

John Treat Courageous and correct decision Director Coit.

Mark Clancy Finally we see a person of political influence or influenced by politics, make a decision that is in the best interest of the people and our fisheries. The state realm is know to be very incestuous or having the fox guard the hen house. Kuddos to Janet Coit. Mmmmm…? Maybe we need more women in politics that can get the job done?

Rick Agree. Bravo!! Win for recreational anglers.

Zak Robinson Thank you Director Coit, managing Striped Bass as coast-wide stock is the most conservative choice.

Arthur severa Best thing that could have happened for striped bass this side of a moritorium, i commend you for this move Director Coit, especially for making it a bla ket rule for recreational and charter alike. Thank you!

Mike I live on n New Jersey and have gone by this rule for a while now. I agree that the larger fish , the breeding stock need protection. I’d rather take smaller fish myself 18-28 and two fish a day but I don’t make the rules. I’m just looking for a fish diner not to stuff my freezer.
