Boating season is winding down for the year. Check out the PA Fish and Boat Commission’s website for the required safety equipment and links to a boating safety course. With the water cooling down, the panfish are moving into shallow waters and trying to put on weight for winter. A reminder that Shenango River Lake is now designated as a Panfish Enhancement Lake. Crappie must be nine inches to harvest and the creel limit is 20.
The Shenango River water trail that flows from the Pymatuning outflow to the Shenango Reservoir is being utilized heavily. Please respect landowners along the stream. There have been many complaints about trespassing in these areas. The waterway is designated as navigable which gives you the right to float through the lands via the river but getting out of your watercraft and going up on the land is considered trespassing.
Clinton and Lycoming Counties
Rose Valley Lake
Fall fishing is ramping up and the current weather is making for some memorable trips on the lake. Anglers are currently having success fishing for Largemouth Bass near points and structure. Artificial baits in natural colors like olive or brown are currently working well.
West Branch Susquehanna
Water levels have remained prime for fishing and boating opportunities. Bass anglers continue to report great catch rates on the river. The bass are currently very healthy and active with the cooling temperatures. Consider joining one of your local watershed organizations to help your community! The Sugar Valley Watershed Association and Trout Unlimited often hold monthly meetings and seeking participants to join their groups. If you hold interest, please contact the groups directly.
Anglers are reporting success targeting Crappies in the area of the causeway using both minnows and small rubber twisters under a float. Some anglers are also having success targeting Catfish in the evening hours using chicken livers and nightcrawlers. Anglers fishing the marina are catching Yellow Perch and other Panfish around the docks and other structure.
Northern Luzerne County
Waterways in the area are brimming from the amount of rain we have had in the area. Fishing on the Susquehanna River has been confusing and hard to track. Some anglers have been having luck for catfish in the deeper holes and areas with a structure set to break the current. Make sure the bait has as much scent as possible with the turbidity we have been experiencing, Bass fishing has been difficult, and anglers need to monitor levels and water clarity regularly to figure out when you might be able to find some success.
Smaller lakes like Frances Slocum and Moon Lake have been very slow. Harveys Lake has still been fishing well for bass and Brown Trout. There have even been schooling perch found around the lake that are nicely sized. For the bass and the perch just look around with your sonar for the big balls of alewife and fish the edges of them.
Area Trout Stocked Waters are soon to receive their autumn allotment of fish. Levels are perfect for the streams right now. Anglers are reminded that we are currently in extended season regulations for Trout Stocked Waters and no more than 3 trout may be kept in these waters and in downstream areas. Upstream areas of these waters are not open for harvest.
Western Bradford and Sullivan County
As we move into fall weather, we have had some rain raising river levels significantly. Anglers looking for some time on the water should look at smaller creeks and standing water. Bass activity has been good lately as water temps cool.
If you are looking for fishing opportunities while avoiding the crowds, then this is a great time of year to hit your favorite stream. Anglers are catching trout in Monocacy Creek below the Illicks Mill Falls, as well as in the Trophy Trout section of Saucon Creek while using a variety of nymph patterns. Bushkill Creek has also be fishing well recently downstream of 13th street in Easton. Although none of these streams will receive a fall adult trout stocking, Minsi Lake is scheduled to be stocked on October 14th at 12:00 PM.
Remember that since Minsi Lake has recently been refilled, only trout may be harvested, all other species of fish must be immediately released.
