Dark days and cold water slow down the freshwater fishing near the end of the year, but as long as there is enough open water to cast into, fishing with micro jigs will keep your still-water trout season alive into the New Year.
Tackle – A long ultralight rod like the Fenwick EliteTech River Runner will cast the micro jigs far enough to reach the fish while easily imparting the short, hopping action that trout go for.
Braided line in 4- to 6-pound test or monofilament of 2- to 4-pound-test will provide the best casting distance with the lightweight jigs.
Jigs – 1/8- to 1/32-ounce maribou, tube, or hair jigs are the perfect size for trout. Work them with fast twitches while reeling slowly for the best result.
Locations – Work steep-sloping shorelines, points, and anywhere moving water enters the pond.
