When the late-winter sunshine begins to open up the frozen ponds in Southern New England, the chain pickerel goes on the prowl.

Chain pickerel aren’t tough to catch. They’ll take bait, lures, and flies cast from a boat, a kayak, or from the bank–and that’s what makes them perfect to break the ice on a new fishing season.

Over the past month of this wacky winter, Eddy Stahowiak and I have been hitting the Cape Cod ponds between cold spells to enjoy the fast fishing for ravenous “slime darts.” Here’s a little video that proves pickerel are worthy of pursuit, in the late winter, the early spring, and all year ’round. – Jimmy Fee
