Snag Hooks: Don’t Leave Home Without One
If there is one item that every (saltwater) angler should have on them at all times, it’s a weighted treble hook. Whether you’re fishing the back bays or out in the canyons, the snag hooks can come in handy, and lead to a memorable catch.

The Next Great Fluke Bait?
Fluke fishermen are almost as prone to falling victim to passing fads as teenagers . Spin ‘n glow rigs, B2 squids and shedder crab oil are just a few of the must-have items that now sit dust-covered (and leaking, in the case of the shedder oil) in my basement. More often than not, these items … Read More

Bone
It’s not quite white, but it’s close, and it’s deadly on stripers. It’s a color called “bone.” The name describes the color pretty well, a muted white, that doesn’t seem too remarkable, until you get it in front of fish.

Kenny Chesney and Costa raise $50,000 for the CCA
OTW General Manager Neal Larsson has made the claim that nothing gets fish biting like country music, and so country singer Kenny Chesney’s music has been in heavy rotation on the OTW company boat’s ear-bending Clarion/Bose stereo system. With songs like “Coastal” it’s obvious Chesney has a love for the water. It’s good to see … Read More

Weekend Fly Fishing Show Finds
During the winter here at On The Water, the weekend means one thing: Heading to one of the many fishing, boating or outdoor sportsman's shows along the East Coast. This weekend, however, I attended the Bear's Den fly fishing show in Taunton, Massachusetts, not as an exhibitor but as a patron. Read More

Weekend Sportsman Show Finds (Philadelphia)
OTW spent the weekend at a number of Sportsman Shows last weekend, including the Greater Philadelphia Outdoor Sportshow. This show has a wide range of exhibitors from the Swampmaster alligator wrestler to the trout pond to the beef jerky and spicy pickle guys. But many of the major fishing tackle manufacturers were there as well … Read More

Weekend Sportsman’s Show Find – The Shimano Tranx
We just got back from spending the weekend at the Fly Fishing Show in Somerset, New Jersey. This is one of the really great outdoors shows every winter. No one selling socks or Sham-Wows. Just aisles and aisles of fly fishing gear, artwork and destinations. Our favorite find at the 2012 Fly Fishing Show wasn’t … Read More

The Conrad
A few months back while talking with legendary luremaker Don Musso for the Super Strike pre-loaded Super ‘N’ Fish Lure of the Month column, we got off topic and started discussing Conrad plugs.

Weekend Boat Show Finds
The Atlantic City Boat Show was jamming this weekend, and in-between signing up subscriptions at the booth and betting away our per-diems at the blackjack tables, we found some great new fishing gear.

Boston Based Reel Company – Cheeky Fly Fishing
I was introduced to Cheeky Fly Fishing last year when I heard about their March Madness Fishing challenge. I signed up for the contest, which involved a bracket filled out with fish instead of college basketball teams. The idea was to pick the fish that would receive the most votes (i.e. be the most popular) … Read More

Snag-Free Crankin
The night before StriperFest I was fishing the Cape Cod Canal with luremaker Patrick Sebile. Patrick shared stories of his adventures fishing around the world, talked about some of his inspiration of lure design and really seemed to get excited when discussing hook placement on lures. Patrick is constantly tinkering with hook size and placement … Read More

Sweet Ice Chisel
Here on Cape Cod, in most years anyway, you can get away with a spud or an ice chisel to punch through the 4-6 inches we’re fishing on. (Some years, like last one, are wonderful, freezing-cold anomalies). It’s typically the same story in much of coastal Southern New England and out on Long Island – … Read More

New Tuna Stickbaits from Sting-O
The southward migrating bluefin tuna have once again shown up a stone’s throw from the Jersey Coast (with rumors of one even being caught off the beach). Just in time, we got this press release about the new stickbait from Sting-O lures, the Sea Thug:

Field Test Favorites: Tactical Anglers Sniper Jacket
Last fall, I reluctantly shelved some of my old, trusty (read: tattered, smelly) hooded sweatshirts to do some fishing in style for a change. Since last October, I’ve donned the Tactical Angler’s Sniper Jacket on many of my fishing outings, and for cold, dry weather, this jacket was tough to beat. With proper layering underneath, … Read More
