Easing into the Season (first striper of the year report)
There’ve been reports of stripers on the Cape for three weeks now. At first schoolies, then small keepers, now fish in the low teens with rumors of bigger fish around. Despite the influx of information regarding the start of a new striper season, I was slow to hit the saltwater. “It’s early,” I kept telling … Read More

Rhode Island’s Felt-Soled Wader Ban Amended
News Update: The RI DEM has revised state regulations so that felt-soled foot gear is prohibited only in state freshwaters. As reported in the March 2012 issue of On The Water magazine, Rhode Island’s anglers – and especially the saltwater shore fishermen – were taken by surprise when the RI DEM published a new regulation … Read More

The Conrad
A few months back while talking with legendary luremaker Don Musso for the Super Strike pre-loaded Super ‘N’ Fish Lure of the Month column, we got off topic and started discussing Conrad plugs.

Local Luremaker: Billy Riker – RuRu Lures
Billy Riker was fishing the surf at night on Block Island (during his honeymoon no less) and ran into a pile of huge spearing with bass funnel-feeding on them. The bass ignored everything he threw, and when another angler came down and joined him, the bass ignored his lures too. “The other guy left, and … Read More

December Stripers
I almost never end my striper season on a “high note.” If I caught a fish on my last trip, how would I know if they weren’t there the following night, or the following week. I always seem to rack up a few good skunkings before putting away the bass gear for the season.

Surfcasting Close Call
This past weekend on Island Beach State Park, one misstep put a surfcaster in mortal danger, but fast action by several bystanders saved a life on the beach. Todd Maiorano wrote this account of the incident in a letter of gratitude to the members of the Berkley Striper Club who saved his life:

Surfcasting Report: December Blues
Some of the most experienced surfcasters in Rhode Island have called this the greatest November of fishing they can remember. After an early end to the fall run for most of New England, a flood of bait entered Rhode Island waters and the bass and blues stuck around to pig out. Steve McKenna, the resident … Read More

Field Test Preview: Century Sling Shot and S1 Stealth
Surf fishermen have had a couple excellent new rod options hit the market over the past couple years, one of these being Century Rods. I’ve been hearing a lot about these rods for their feather-light weights, casting distances and excellent actions.

Summer’s End Surfcasting (Outer Cape Report)
With the vast majority of traffic heading off-Cape at the end of a windy Labor Day weekend, Kevin Blinkoff and I loaded up the truck and headed out Route 6. Our destination was the Cape Cod National Seashore, where we’d hoped to find some stripers taking a cue from the tourists that summer was over … Read More

Korkers Chrome Boots (Review)
I’m 6 months into fishing my Chrome Boots from Korkers. With the interchangeable soles and Boa lacing, I thought these boots would be perfect for a wide range of fishing.

New Sand Eel “Teasers” from Tsunami
It seems like every species of gamefish in the Northeast – from fluke to stripers to bluefin tuna -eats sand eels, those pencil-thin baitfish with the silvery sides and olive-green backs. Sand eels have been especially abundant the past few years, and lure makers have had a chance to crank out some pretty good imitations … Read More

Field Test Favorites: CTS RH Custom Rods Series Blank
One of my goals with FOTJ is to provide occasional reviews of products I’ve been fishing. These may not always be brand new products, but they will always be ones that I highly recommend. To start it off, I thought a new, unique rod that I’ve been loving for the last year-and-a-half would be appropriate.

OTW TV – Canal Mackerel Blitz – Part 2
(Continued from Part 1) Cast after cast resulted in an arm-jarring strike from the mackerel-hungry bass. Everywhere I looked up and down the canal, anglers were holding onto bucking rods attached to 10- to 30-pound stripers. All the way across the canal, it looked like bowling balls were being tossed from the Bourne Bridge as … Read More
