Fishing in the Snow (Weekend Report)

January 23, 2012 by

I love fishing in the snow. The same pond you’ve fished a hundred times seems new again under a fresh blanket of the white stuff. Plus, with such a monochromatic background the colors of a freshly caught trout or largemouth or smallmouth bass seem to be especially radiant, almost glowing against the white-washed surroundings. So when I set out on Saturday morning, while the first real storm of winter was in the process of dumping 10 inches of snow on the Upper Cape, I had one goal – catch a fish and photograph it. Here are some of the shots of this weekend’s fishing by the OTW Crew. (Photos by Andy Nabreski and Jimmy Fee)

Plan A was to launch the kayak and vertical jig for smallmouth.

It didn't take too long before moving to Plan B.

I met up with Andy Nabreski at a nearby trout pond to see if any salmonids would be willing biters during the snowstorm.

After 30 minutes of casting, Andy hooked up while throwing a big stickbait.

Stickbaits are excellent cold-water trout lures, as this nice rainbow proved.

Things slowed down after Andy's fish, and just as we were about to call it quits, I hooked up.

The nice brown put up a great fight on the ultralight tackle, but he eventually tired and came to shore.

Two trout in the snow and photos of both -- mission accomplished. After releasing the brown trout, we made a few more casts and headed home.

Chris Megan, Anthony DeCicchi and I snuck out for some pre-playoffs fishing on Sunday.

Even with the sun occasionally peeking through the clouds, it was bitter cold, and the trout were hunkered down and not feeding.

Chris had the only hit of the day on a Rainbow-Trout-Colored Kastmaster.

After releasing this pretty rainbow trout, Chris was off to watch the Pats secure their spot in Super Bowl XLVI.

In some parts of New England, anglers venturing onto safe ice hooked some fish that would have made a snack out of our trout. Check out OTW Contributor Kierran Broatch’s Ice Pike Weekend Report.
