“In a word, excellent,” said Steve McKenna when asked about the current fishing in Rhode Island. Bass and blues are both hot, from the surf and when conditions allow, for the boats too. Bass from 20 to 30 pounds were caught this week, with many of the bigger fish biting after dark. Read More

Even though we’re getting late into October, the fishing hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down…yet. Striper fishing is good, freshwater fishing is phenomenal and the bluefin are still hanging around. Pepper in some fast action with blackfish, and you have one great weekend of fall fishing on tap. With water temperatures north of the mid-50s as far “down” as Southern Maine combined with bays full of bait, striped bass seem content to stay put. What is lacking is reports from anglers, with the vast majority having pulled their boats and stowed their gear. Read More

Don’t count on getting offshore for the next couple days, but before the wind picked up, reports were looking pretty good, especially for bluefin tuna in New England. Offshore action in the southern canyons has been spotty for the most part, but the tuna have been running big, 70 to 90 pounds. Hudson and Lindenkohl … Read More

OK, Enough… Let’s GO! It all starts when I take out my Patagonia fleece vest. All that running down to the beach after work in my shorts to wet wade, or bouncing up in the pre-dawn and jumping into my flip-flops is totally a blast, but when I have to put on the vest, that … Read More

The thus far uncharacteristically slow fall has pitted naysayer against optimist. Opinions have run the gamut from those feeling that what little striped bass migration we had passed us by in the blink of an eye, while others point to extraordinarily warm water temperatures as a reason to believe IT hasn’t even happened yet. The definitive answer comes by way of Downeast Maine, where they are hip deep in stripers up to 40 pounds! Read More

Classic fall run conditions can be found across Long Island right now as cooler nights and shorter days jumpstart coastal fisheries. Bass remain in full-on blitz mode out at Montauk, with big numbers of 28- to 36-inch fish pushing through the rips and into the wash under the lighthouse. Tog fishing is off to a good start in shallow water, and the bite should get better as we head toward the end of the month. Sea bass and porgy fishing remains strong off the South Shore’s artificial reefs, and there’s even a few knotheads still showing up in the Long Island Sound alongside good numbers of jumbo porgies. The October new moon tides begin in just a few days, and fishing should go from good-to-great by this Sunday and continue through the middle of next week. Here’s the breakdown. Read More

If you haven’t been pounding the water lately, then you better have a good excuse! Rhode Island beaches are alive with striped bass, bluefish and false albacore. Jumbo black sea bass are holding their ground off Block Island. Monster blackfish are coming out of Rhode Island waters and Connecticut’s season opened up with a bang despite nasty weather. On the freshwater side of things, numerous stockings of trout and breeder salmon are keeping anglers busy across the region. Read More
