Hopefully last week’s storm was the death rattle of what has felt like an especially long, cold and snowy winter. Anglers throughout Long Island are chomping at the bit to feel at tug at the end of the line, and there are a couple options for this weekend. Read More »

Lake Ontario and tributaries – Small boats have been starting to pound the beaches and off the pier heads in Olcott to take brown trout on small stickbaits and casting spoons, a sure sign of spring. Wes Walker at The Slippery Sinker also reports that pier casters have been picking up some fish, too, on casting spoons like Little Cleos. Burt Dam and 18 Mile Creek is also holding steelhead and a few browns up the creek and the water is still a bit stained but slowly clearing. When it does clear, look for perch to start hitting down in the harbor, as well as over in Wilson. Speaking of Wilson, jot down April 5-6 for the First Annual Jeans Bullhead Contest.  Read More »

If the high volume of posts on fishing forums and social media sites are any indication, spring fever is spreading like wildfire. From amphibian migrations to the first river herring showing up, signs of spring are all around us. Pleasant weather and better fishing are right around the corner and the time is now to get your fresh and saltwater gear in order. Reels need to be serviced, new line purchased, hooks sharpened, leaders tied, and the list goes on. Do it soon before trout are sipping mayflies and fresh stripers are running up rivers. If you’re ready now, there are a few solid fishing opportunities to take advantage of from holdover linesiders to ice-out pike and bass to catch and release trout. Read More »

Fishing picked up substantially Monday when the stocking trucks made their rounds on Cape Cod depositing hungry trout in deep, cold ponds. Anglers have been catching good numbers of rainbows since then. Read More »

The mother of all fishing shows in the Northeast is finally here. After a long winter, saltwater anglers will be coming out of the woodwork this weekend and heading to the Rhode Island Convention Center to shake off the “shack nasties.” Between informative seminars, good deals on gear and great networking with other fishermen, I don’t see a reason not to take a ride to Providence. If you want to actually fish instead of talk about it, cod will be an option once the storm moves out, holdover striped bass are stirring, trout are cooperating in catch and release areas, and there are a couple last ice options in northwest Connecticut. Read More »

Long Island anglers are suffering from a lack of options right now. With most inshore saltwater species out of season, it leaves only cod and ling for the bottom fishing crowd, and lately, the cod fishing has been slow. Read More »

Lake Ontario and tributaries – In the tributaries of Lake Ontario, just about every stream has flow and fish – 4 mile, 12 Mile, 18 Mile, Hopkins and Keg creeks. Water levels have come down and it was slightly stained according to Wes Walker at The Slippery Sinker. Casting Olcott Harbor has been good for trout with spoons or minnows. A few perch and pike were also being reported. The ice in Wilson has broken up a bit from the north winds and water flow issues so it’s best to stay off the hard stuff. Pier casting should be starting up, too, with spoons or spinners. The Lake Ontario Trout and Salmon Assn. will hold their monthly meeting on Thursday at Cornell Cooperative Extension starting at 7 p.m. Guest speaker will be Capt. Jim Skoczylas of Ultimate Adventure Sportfishing talking about the use of torpedo divers for salmon and walleye. State of Lake Ontario meeting for Lockport is March 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension. Read More »

It is Thursday morning in beautiful Margate NJ. Our homes have survived last nights 70 mph Nor'easter, our garage floors are wet from the high tide, and our tile floors are just starting to warm up from our power being out for 16 hours or so overnight. With all of that on the front burner, you can imagine why all I want to do is get on the horn and start talking to our network about something that warms my heart instead of leaving another layer of frost on it.... fishing in March! Read More »

It’s no secret that the last leg of ice fishing is often the best. Fish that have been cloaked under a dark ceiling of white for months are newly energized by the pre-spring thaw and glimmers of sunshine slicing through open patches of ice and eroded auger holes. But those same auger holes, some which are now feet wide, can be camouflaged by snowfall—so your priority should be safety and the buddy system even as you yearn for that personal best. Read More »
