    “Weird” Local Fish

    by

Below is a picture of a juvenile barrelfish I caught in the Cape Cod Canal last summer. It was hanging under the docks at the Sandwich marina, at first I thought it was a small harbor pollock. It charged my jig three times before eating it, and after a quick fight, I grabbed it … Read More »

New Jersey Beach Access in Peril

    by

The NJ DEP has proposed new procedures involving beach access that would let individual towns determine their own beach access plans. In the past, the state regulated access, requiring 24/7 beach access and a specific number of bathrooms for each town’s beaches in order for the town to qualify for beach replenishment funding. The threat … Read More »

    Unconventional Stripping Basket Use

    by

I’m pretty sure my actions at Falmouth Bait and Tackle yesterday were a mortal sin against the fly fishing gods.

    Lightning Encounter (Update)

    by

After a little more searching following my rod-buzzing lightning encounter last week, I found some pictures of fishing rods that had been struck by lightning. Pretty wild. Looks like I was a couple minutes away from having my 11-foot Lamiglas turned into a custom feather duster with orange wraps.

    StructureScan for the Surfcaster

    by

I very rarely get the opportunity to target striped bass from a boat, so when Lowrance Pro Staff member Captain Jimmy Auld invited me out to fish light tackle for schoolie bass as well as check out the Lowrance StructureScan and SideScan in action, I jumped at the opportunity. At the launch, we were met … Read More »

    Lightning

    by

I’ve never been too rattled by lightning, in fact, on occasion, I welcome it for its ability to clear out otherwise crowded fishing areas. This isn’t to say I haven’t been too cavalier (read: stupid) about lightning safety in the past. I recall one June night where I spent the better part of an hour … Read More »

We Think We’ve Got it Bad…

    by

Surfcasters, especially on the Cape know how detrimental seals can be to fishing. Any angler who’s spent enough time fishing the beaches of Chatham, Nantucket and Race Point has had an encounter with a gray seal that has decided he’d like to take a few bites out of your hooked striper. One of the striper-stealing … Read More »

The Post Standard, a Syracuse, New York newspaper, is looking for anglers to Tweet fishing reports from streams throughout central New York on Opening Trout Day, this Friday, April 1. Anglers who agree will have their Twitter reports fed directly into the Post Standard’s Outdoors Blog for all to see. Seems like a pretty cool … Read More »

    Getting the Gear

    by

In the Restoration Files: Part II, featured in the February Issue of On The Water Magazine, you’ll read how Neal Larsson decided on which items would make the Black Watch one of the baddest fishing vessels in the Northeast. After discussing our project with companies such as Bose, Clarion, ITT/Jabsco and ShadowCaster, they helped us … Read More »
